8 Minutes: Bradley Air Museum and the 1979 Windsor Locks Tornado
Rating the Intensity of a Tornado
The Windsor Locks tornado was rated an F4. What does that mean? At that time, tornado intensity was measured using a scale developed by researcher “Ted” Fujita that tied damage to estimated wind speeds generated during a storm. The Fujita Scale, as it came to be known, was in use from 1971 until its replacement by the Enhanced Fujita Scale in 2007.
