The Packard 2500 series was designed as a successor to the World War I-era Liberty L-12. They were built in direct-drive and geared types and by 1927 were the most powerful standard aircraft engines in existence. Five variants of aircraft engines were produced with the 3A-2500 being the most numerous. There were also three marine types made and were used prominently in World War II PT-boats.

This engine, serial number 561, is one of only five outside carburetor models produced by Packard. Two Stromberg updraft carburators are mounted on each bank.

This is a rare engine with only three known to exist today. The Boeing TB-1 torpedo bomber used the 3A-2500 in three airplanes.
