The Jumo inaugurated the Jet Age when it was introduced by the German Luftwaffe late in World War II. It was the first mass-produced jet aircraft engine and powered the world's first operational jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me-262 and jet bomber the Aradi Ar-234. Although a lack of high-temperature metals limited its thrust to less than 2,000 lbs., its axial flow design ultimately proved highly successful making it the forerunner of today's high-performance jet aircraft engines.
