|Thoughts About the 58th:||After being in the AAF for over three years, becoming a part of the 58th as a combat crew member of a B-29 allowed me to feel that I had done at least a small part in defeating the enemies of our great country.|
Upon finishing radio school at Scott Field, IL, I received a nine-day delay in route to Lincoln, NE, to the B-29 combat crew pool and was assigned to the 40th Bomb Group of the 58th BW to train at Alamogordo, NM. On February 10, 1945 while on this furlough, I married Catherine Marie Baker in Rossville, GA.
When the war ended I got to help ferry an old war-weary B-29 back to the States. I arrived at Sacramento, CA, on October 13, 1945, and received a thirty-day delay in route to Camp Chaffee, AR, and would be reassigned to March Field, CA. My son, Bill, Jr. was born on November 19, 1945, and I returned to Camp Chaffee, AR and was discharged on November 28, 1945.
Mr. Weaver passed away on December 20, 2007 in Huntsville, AL and is interred at Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood, TN.
