Thoughts About the 58th:
Captain (Air Corps) William L. Sanford, United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while in the XX Bomber Command, TWENTIETH Air Force, while participating in a bombing mission on 20 August 1944. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sanford on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 20th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
Captain Sanford also landed the first B-29 at Piardoba, India on April 16, 1944.
Comments: Mr. Sanford passed away in October, 1983. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
