He attended Iowa State College, where he majored in dairy engineering, and later transferred to the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a degree in business administration. He was president of Dougherty County Cancer Society, Radium Springs Country Club and Albany Board of Realtors. He also coached little league baseball for many years.
