Thoughts About the 58th: Mitchell's Purple Heart was awarded after his top gun turret blister blew out. The bomber crashed in a river bed in eastern China, about 25 kilometers from Japanese territory, after it ran out of fuel due to a damaged fuel transfer system.
Comments: Mr. Mitchell passed away June 12, 2010. He is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Farmington, ME.
