Thoughts About the 58th: First, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve my country and I shall never regret it. Because of such service, I am a better person and have made some wonderful friends, friends for lifetime. Yes, we were once comrades in war but friends forever. Because of my service, I not only got to see different parts of the world but also have come to see firsthand how other people live. It has made me realize how truly blessed we are here in America.
Comments: Being called to active duty in 1943, shortly after Franklin Delano Roosevelt's famous “Declaration of War,” and having to leave my mother, father, brothers and sisters was a very traumatic experience, but I had to leave not knowing where I would end up and if I would ever see them again.
