|Thoughts About the 58th:||
My three years of military service during World War II was an adventure unparalleled in my life with special recognition of the fine men with whom I served, and the lasting friendships which followed. For what interest it may have, a brief summary of my tour of duty follows: Enlisted November 24, 1942, and reported to Ft. Devens, Massachusetts; by train to Miami Beach, Florida for basic training then to Scott Field, Illinois for radio operator and mechanic school with a few days of flood duty placing sand bags against the flooding Mississippi River a few miles south. On to Madison, Wisconsin at Truax Field for radio maintenance school followed by a brief leave for home. By train to Boca Raton Field, Florida and high altitude bombing radar operation and maintenance school for five months. Home leave for a few days then to Port of Aerial Embarkation, Greenville, NC. On to Miami Beach again, and the Fleetwood Hotel and overseas preparation. Departed Miami Airport with a dozen others on a C-54 of the Air Transport Command. We made stops at Bermuda, the Azores (Fayal) and then Casablanca, Morocco. A C-46 took us to Tripoli, Libya, where we landed at night in a ground fog where, at this point, the great skill of the pilot avoided the removal of the control tower. We were fed here by Italian war prisoners in a heavily damaged aircraft hangar. On to Heliopolis, Egypt, and stop over long enough to visit Cairo and the Pyramids. Next stop was Abadan, Persia, and then Karachi, India, Kharagpur and a 6x6 truck to Chakulia.
After several months in India we boarded the army transport General J. H. McRae for a cruise of forty three days to Melbourne, Australia, then Townsville, Australia (where we picked up Aussie troops headed for Madang, New Guinea), Ulithi Islands, and finally the island of Tinian the Mariana Islands. At war's end we had another sea voyage, this time 21 days to San Pedro, California, and a train to March Field. A day pass took us to Los Angeles, and the movie capitol to stand at the corner of Hollywood and Vine.
A C-47 flew us to Tucson, El Paso and finally Newark, N.J. Five of us went from there by train to Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, for discharge and home.
