Thoughts on the 58th Bomb Wing:

I saw the poverty of India. I am pleased to have been a part of bringing peace to the world during WWII. I witnessed history in the making on August 6, 1945. While working in the Operations Office, a buddy from the Engineering Office and I watched all available aircraft at our field, West Field, on Tinian Island, take off and then drove to North Field to watch all available aircraft take off, all on various diversionary missions, not knowing at the time that one of the planes at North Field was carrying the Atomic Bomb. Later that morning, a rumor circled the base about a charge the size of a softball in one of the bombs that would destroy a city. Early that afternoon, General Curtis LeMay announced from Guam, over the PA system, that history was made that day as one bomb destroyed a large city in Japan.
