Waco YKC-S

Waco YKC-S

Gift of L. R. Smith, Jr.

The Weaver Aircraft Co. formed in 1920 produced a range of aircraft that were known as WACO’s (pronounced \'wah-co\, an acronym of the company name). The company was renamed to Advanced Aircraft Co. in 1923 and finally in 1929 to the Waco Aircraft Co. Located in Troy, OH. They were a manufacturer of a wide range aircraft which were used in public, private, corporate and military applications. Waco withdrew from aircraft production in 1947 following a post-World War II slump in the aviation market. During the company’s existence, they produced 62 different models and led all of its competitors in the number of aircraft registrations.

The YKC-S is a model from their Standard Cabin series of civilian biplanes. The design is unique in that the biplane wings are of unequal span and staggered. The Standard Cabin series with its cabin comfort became popular with private pilot owners. They were also purchased by small commercial aviation companies for light passenger and utility transport use.

Restored by Wingworks of North Canaan, CT, the Museum’s is one of the finest examples of this aircraft model in the country. In 2003 it was the Antique Silver Age Champion at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
