Special Events


Open Cockpit Sunday February 19
Visitors will be permitted to climb into the cockpits of up to 12 vintage aircraft, a full-motion flight simulator and two static flight simulators.
The aircraft to be open include the famous Vought Corsair of WWII, the North American  F-100 Super Sabre, a DC-3 airliner, several helicopters and more. 
In addition to the open cockpit program, numerous other activities are planned. 
There will be a program on the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII complete with exhibits, films and a guest appearance by Tuskegee Airman Connie Nappier who will be on hand form 11 AM – 1 PM.
There will be a display of more than 250 vintage flying toys that were recently donated to the Museum by Peter Webber of Tolland, Conn.  The Museum’s Education Department will run a craft activity for children.  Time Machine Hobbies of Manchester, Conn. will do demonstrations flying of radio-controlled airplanes and helicopters.  Horizon Wings will be presenting three of theirraptors. A Red-tailed hawk in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, a Peregrine Falcon and a Barn owl. Come meet these magnificent birds from 10 - 11:30 AM and learn about the elements of flight unique to each type of raptor.  Connecticut Hackerspace (www.cthackerspace.com) will demonstrate “do it yourself” build projects using common technology.

For the convenience of all, a food vendor will be on site all day. The Open Cockpit program runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with the Museum and Gift Shop staying open until 5:00 PM. 
Reminder all cockpits close at 4:00 p.m.

February Vacation Activities -
Monday, February 20th - A room full of LEGOS will be set up in the conference center and the theme is “The Future of Flight”. The program is for ages 3-12 and will run from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for each age category: 3-5, 6-8 & 9-12

Tuesday, February 21st - The Museum will host an open cockpit program with about 6 aircraft to be open including a helicopter, an airliner, a jet fighter and a WWII aircraft. All cockpits will close at 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday, February 22nd - There will be an Aero Modeling Workshop running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on a first-come first-served basis. This activity takes about an hour and a half to complete.   Children ages 8-14 can build and fly their own models. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. There is a $4.00 cost for the kit.

Thursday, February 23rd - There will be a Nose Art activity for visitors ages 3-12.  View and learn the meaning of nose art through our B-29 Superfortress and our other aircraft. Children will have the opportunity to draw nose art and bring their artwork home. The Program will run from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.  We will also have an Airplane Challenge running from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m-3:00 p.m. Test your flying and folding skills by designing a paper airplane that will fly the longest in the Great Paper Airplane Distance Challenge. Prizes will be awarded for the longest flights.

Friday, February 24th - “Toys in Space” is the theme for the day. Participate in two programs at 11:00am & 2:00pm learning and discovering how common toys act in space. Our renowned Dr. Flush will be leading the program with your help.

Open Cockpit Sunday March 18
Visitors will be permitted to climb into the cockpits of up to 12 vintage aircraft, a full-motion flight simulator and two static flight simulators.
The aircraft to be open include the famous Vought Corsair of WWII, the North American  F-100 Super Sabre, a DC-3 airliner, several helicopters and more. 
As an added feature, visitors will be given special access to the Mitchell B-25 bomber of WWII where they can glimpse in to the cockpit and talk to some of the Museum staff who were responsible for its restoration. Also participating in the event will be Time Machine Hobby of Manchester, Conn. who will put on flying demonstrations of RC helicopters.  Additionally, the Central Connecticut Radio Control Club will also provide an exhibit and demonstrations.
For the convenience of all, a food vendor will be on site all day. The Open Cockpit program runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with the Museum and Gift Shop staying open until 5:00 PM.

Sunday Speaker Program
‘Connecticut in the Cold War’ – 1:30 pm a program will be presented about the Cold War. Hartford and Bridgeport were surrounded by nuclear-tipped missiles on 24-hour alert ready to shoot down incoming Soviet bombers. Learn more about these bases and other aspects of the state's Cold War infrastructure when author and historian John Ramsey, webmaster of coldwar-ct.com, joins us for a special presentation. This program is included with the price of admission.

Lecture by Sergei N. Khrushchev
A lecture by Sergei N. Khrushchev, son of Nikita Khrushchev who served as Prime Minister of the Soviet Union from 1957-1964.  The topic of his lecture will be “The Soviet Space Program”. Details to follow.
