He retired from the Central Vermont Public Service and enjoyed many years of golf and his home on French Hill. Herb spent many hours working to preserve the history and honor of local military veterans who so courageously served their country and communities. Herb was a member of the Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion, the Champlain Country Club and the St. Albans Historical Society.

Thoughts on the 58th Bomb Wing:
During his service he was shot down twice and forced to bail out over the Indian Ocean.
A/C 469, on Mission 41, March 2nd 1945, encountered intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire directly over the target from units anchored just NW of the aiming point. A/C 469 went over the target with 4 other planes.

After jumping, Peterson undid his chest straps, and being unable to undo the leg straps, just pulled his legs out. He had considerable difficulty inflating the raft and became entangled in shroud lines and removed his shoes. After joining with the Flight Engineer, they tied their rafts together and tried, without success, to make for the Island. The rafts leaked and had to be repeatedly blown up
