Ryan PT-22A 'Recruit'
Gift from Eric Friedrichsen
The Ryan PT-22 Recruit is a military trainer aircraft that was used by the United States Army Air Corps and its successor, the United States Army Air Force for primary pilot training. It was the first monoplane that the Army had used for primary pilot training, as all previous PT aircraft were biplanes. The "A" designation is for airplanes manufactured for the Netherlands Air Force in the Dutch East Indies.
This airplane was on the dock in San Francisco, awaiting shipment to Djakarta, when the Japanese invaded and captured the Dutch East Indies. The airplane was repossessed by the US Army Air Corps and used as a primary trainer at Mather Field, Sacramento, California.
