Gift of Pioneer International Aircraft
As a relatively inexpensive way to fly, the popular hang gliders inevitably led to powered versions which then evolved into the somewhat more sophisticated ultralights, such as the Flight Star which was built by Pioneer International Aircraft of Ellington, CT. The nearly 1,000 Flight Stars produced enjoyed worldwide popularity, partly because, although strongly recommended, no formal training or license was required. It was even used by the Brazilian Navy as a trainer. Powered by a 35 HP Kawasaki engine, it could take off in 100 feet and cruise at 50 MPH.
