Mr. Crumpler arrived in the CBI early in 1943 as a member of the American Field Service.  He had volunteered with the AFS while he was a reporter at the New York Herald Tribune.   He initially served as an ambulance driver and the field cashier on the China-Burma front, and after his enlistment period was up, he joined the United Press International in New Delhi as a war correspondent.

Mr. Crumpler flew on missions from Chengdu, China on B-29s, and also flew several missions with the 10th Air Force.

Post-WWII Military Service:

Mr. Crumpler spent 10 years in the Foreign Service after the war, covering Karachi, Ankara, Istanbul and Amman.


Mr. Crumpler was reassigned to Manila in 1945 to cover General MacArthur's campaign in the Philippines.  He was present at the surrender of Japan on the USS Missouri.  He was also present at the Japanese surrender in Korea.

Mr. Crumpler passed away on January 11, 2004.
