He operated his own body shop business and in 1963 moved to Indianapolis where he made his home. He was a body shop manager for many local dealerships before retiring in 1986.

| Thoughts on the 58th Bomb Wing: |
|
Departed on Feb. 11, 1944 for India, arrived on May 2, 1944. Served as bombsight mechanic. Performed duties overseas in India and Tinian. Inspected, cleaned, tested, lubricated, calibrated and made minor parts replacement to bombsights and auto flight control equipment. Removed bombsights from airplanes and mounted on test stands. Checked accuracy of computing mechanism and replaced bearings and other moving parts.

Mr. Hermsen passed away March 5th 2012. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Greenwood, IN.
