| Upon establishment of the separate Air Force, I accepted a regular commission on October 26, 1947. In January 1948 I transferred to Tyndall Field, FL to attend Air Tactical School. Following completion of the course, I was transferred to Saudia Base, Albuquerque, for training as a Weaponeer in the Atomic Bomb project. In retrospect, I consider my selection as one of a very limited group to receive this specialized Top Secret training as the top recognition of my service career. This program involved learning every component and circuit in the bomb and its operation relative to others in the sequence of events necessary for proper function of the bomb after release. The Weaponeer's duty included airborne monitoring and arming the bomb with the nuclear core prior to release Upon completion of training, I joined the 43rd Bomb Group at Davis Monthan AFB for four years, followed by a year at 15th AF HQ, March AFB California. I resigned my commission October 1953 with rank of Major after twelve years of service. |
