Mr. Rewitz was shot down during the Yawata mission on August 20, 1944, four of the crew were killed. The other seven were taken prisoner. Ernest Pickett documented the story in a book called, "Proof Through the Night."
The plane crashed in Saienba, Kokura City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

Mr. Rewitz passed away November 12, 1965. He is buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA.
