He spent nine years as a special agent in the Cleveland and D.C. field offices and also worked at FBI headquarters. He was later Director of air transportation security for the Federal Aviation Administration
President Ford honored Mr. Murphy with the Department of Transportation Secretary's Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Mr. Murphy passed away June 3, 2006. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
