Day Trip to The Collings Foundation
On Saturday, September 6, the Air Museum will sponsor a motorcoach trip to Stow to see The Collings Foundation collection of fabulous automobiles. Also included in the tour are 10 historic aircraft that are on static display as well as, other types of vehicles.
Many of you are quite familiar with the historic aircraft that are owned and flown by The Collings Foundation such as their B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” and their “All American” B-24 Liberator. But the Foundation also maintains one of the world’s most impressive collection of automobiles.
The Collings Foundation has some of the most important pre-war American classic cars and historically significant race cars in the world. They are housed in purpose-built buildings of over 70,000 sq/ft to complement the aircraft collection. Some of the cars in the collection include: 1901 Oldsmobile Curved Dash, 1904 Franklin Type A Roadster, 1908 Stanley Steamer Touring Car (20 hp), 1919 Willys-Sterns Knight Touring Car, 1928 Pierce Arrow Series 81 Limousine, 1940 Cadillac Limousine V-16 owned by Al Capone and is original and unrestored, 1961 Travis/Offy team car which ran Indy from 1961-1964 and was the sister car to the 1961 winner, and the 1937 Rutherford which won over 300 races!
Aircraft on display include: 1909 Bleriot Type XI, Boeing PT-17 Stearman, Fiesler FI-156 Storch, Cessna UC-78 Bobcat, and more.
They now have a Sherman tank on display along with additional military equipment. Also in the collection are early trucks and farm vehicles.
