John W. Ramsay Research Library

The volunteers of the John W. Ramsay Research Library work to collect, preserve, catalog, and share information which embodies the history and technology of aerospace, in support of the New England Air Museum.

NEAM Library Reading Room
The library is open every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All research indexes are located in the Reading Room, while the stacks are open only to library personnel.
The all-volunteer library staff consists of a Coordinator, a Research Librarian, and 15 volunteer staff.
The library occupies about 7,000 square feet on two floors of the Museum's Civil Aviation Hangar. Most library holdings are indexed in a single database, which is available in the Reading Room.
The collection is organized in the following categories:
AVIATION BOOKS - Approximately 20,000.
TECHNICAL MANUALS - Approximately 10,000 manuals and pilot's operating handbooks.
AVIATION PERIODICALS - Approximately 97,000 items with several hundred titles.
AUDIO/VIDEO MATERIALS - Over 1000 DVDs and VHS tapes, 350 audio tapes, and approximately 730,000 images on NASM videodiscs.
PHOTOGRAPHS - Approximately 21,000 black and white prints and 7,800 slides.
ARCHIVES - Papers of many New England aviation pioneers, including Burnelli, Whitehead, Wittiman, and Sikorsky, plus historical documents of the Connecticut Aeronautical Historical Association, the New England Air Museum, and other organizations.

Library Research Procedure

Museum members will not be charged for research access and non-members will be charged a $25 fee per visit.
NEAM Library Reading Room
All researchers much sign in at the Museum ticket counter where they will fill out a library research form that will include name, address, phone and email contact info. They will agree to our terms as stated below, and pay any applicable fee. The counter staff will then notify the library.
In the library, the researcher will only have access to the library reading room on the lower level. They will ask a volunteer for specific files they have found in the finding aid. Items will be brought to them in the reading room. The public will not be allowed into any of the archive rooms or upstairs.

Research Terms

Credit to the New England Air Museum (NEAM) must be given on any published materials that result from information provided by NEAM.
There will be a fee for any images reproduced for publishing of any kind and all images will be labeled courtesy of the New England Air Museum.
A copy of any published material derived from research conducted at NEAM will be provided to NEAM for its archives.
Special written permission must be obtained for any images that are intended to be used for commercial reproduction or sale.
