During WW-II the Kiekhaefer Corporation manufactured small two-cylinder drone engines that were used for target aircraft. Since there were no computer simulators at that time, small aircraft were used as target practice to teach anti-aircraft gunners how to shoot down planes.

This Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp engine was widely used in the 1930s and 1940s. It is a 2 row, 14 cylinder, air-cooled radial design. A version with a slightly higher rating was produced as the R-2000. Major applications were on the Consolidated B-24, Douglas C-47, Grumman F-4F and the Consolidated PBY.

The P&W R-2800, Double Wasp, was America's first 18 cylinder radial engine design. Its first run was in 1937. It is considered one of the premier radial piston engines ever designed and is notable for its widespread use in many important American aircraft during WW II. Its major applications were the A-26 Invader, B-26 Marauder, F4U Corsair, F6F Hellcat and P-47 Thunderbolt. 125,334 were produced.

The power range was from 2,200 to 3,700hp. First run was in 1937. This engine powered the Boeing B-29 during WW II and after the war it was used in commercial aircraft such as the Lockheed Constellation and the Douglas DC-7.
