2008 Reunion
The staff at NEAM again set up a great reunion for us in Colorado Springs. The accommodations were very good and the people at the hotel couldn't do enough for us. It made the reunion that much more special. Many of our old friends were present, and we very much missed the ones who were not. 128 people attended from the 58th. Some of them were family accompanying members, and some spouses of Vets also were to able to make it. They were all very welcome, we love to see family, and have gotten to know them quite well. Many thanks to NEAM.
Our 462nd Group Dinner was held in the hotel atrium along with the other groups in separate places. It was a public area and I know that many of you couldn't hear what was said. So, I will attempt to fill you in on the details. As usual, we welcomed all whom were present. We had 40 people at our dinner two of them from the 40th, and three first timers. We trust they had a good time and will be at future reunions. I asked them "Where have you been?" Just think, it's been 63 years since we were making regular runs to Japan from Tinian Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Not too many years after that we began having these reunions. Early on, we had as many as nine busses to haul us to the many activities at the reunions. Now we are down to two. Much has happened in these fun years that we were together. Many of those friends have since departed. Our Chaplain, George Allen had words to that effect in the prayer before dinner. As usual, we saluted the flag and I gave the secretaries report. No monies was spent this year. In all cases I was able to get on the funeral home's web site and leave a message to families of the deceased from the 462nd. One special case was the passing of Bob Wheeler, who served on the Board of Directors. I obtained a special card and mailed it to his wife and family. Dennis Savage, who was the project coordinator for the B-29 now in the memorial at NEAM, was there on Thursday with the books he put together about the B- 29. It is a fine publication that has much that has never been published before. Much is of the inside of the plane. George Allen left us with a prayer that we all would be together again, and remembering those who were unable to be there. We all enjoyed the company of our fellow Hellbirds and had a great evening. Ray Perry ex 462nd Sect.
